Towards an optimized Coupling-Loss Induced Quench protection system (CLIQ) for quadrupole magnets

چکیده
The recently developed Coupling-Loss-Induced Quench (CLIQ) protection system is a new method for initiating a fast and voluminous transition to the normal state for protecting high energy density superconducting magnets. Its simple and robust electrical design, its lower failure rate, and its more efficient energy deposition mechanism make CLIQ often preferable to other conventional quench protection methods. The system is now implemented for the protection of a two meter long superconducting quadrupole model magnet and as such fully characterized in the CERN magnet test facility. Test results convincingly show that CLIQ allows for a more global quench initiation and thus a faster discharge of the magnet energy than conventional quench heaters. Nevertheless, the CLIQ performance is strongly affected by the length of the magnet to protect, hence an optimization is required for effective application to full-size magnets. A series of measures for the optimization of a quench protection system for a quadrupole magnet based on CLIQ is outlined here. The impact of various key parameters on CLIQ’s performance, the most efficient CLIQ configuration, and the advantage of installing multiple CLIQ units are assessed. © 2014 The Authors. Influence of Protection Circuit on Quench Characteristics for Clinical MRI Superconducting Magnets
Introduction MRI technology utilizes highly sophisticated superconducting (SC) magnet technology. During the prototyping of the SC MRI magnet, quenching (i.e., catastrophic helium evaporation and complete loss of liquid helium) can often occur. Therefore, a reliable quench analysis is very important for the development of SCMRI magnets. However, it is difficult to accurately model quench charac...
متن کاملChange in Field Harmonics after Quench and Thermal Cycles in Superconducting Magnets*
A change in field harmonics after quench and thermal cycles has been observed in superconducting magnets for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This paper presents the results of a systematic investigation of this effect in a number of RHIC dipole and quadrupole magnets. These changes in field harmonics may limit the ultimate field quality and its reproducibility in superconducting mag...
متن کاملAC-Loss Induced Quenching in Adiabatic Coils Wound with Composite Superconductors Having Different Twist Pitches
The effect of filament twist pitch length on AC-loss induced normal zone propagation in adiabatic coils wound with composite NbTi superconductor was investigated. Two test coils were constructed. They were identical in shape, dimensions, and other parameters, the exception being the conductor's filament twist pitch length. One had a twist pitch length of 10 mm and the other had a twist pitch le...
